Way Back When

Let us jump on a time machine and zoom back just shy of six years ago.  Well, why we are at it let us just go on and go back six full years.  Commander Cody was in first grade and struggling.  Struggling with a bully.  Struggling with reading.  Struggling with anxiety.  I don't know how else to express what was going on but to say he was struggling!  Some how he went into first grade at a low first grade reading level and by the Christmas break he had fallen back to reading at a kindergarten level.  Needless to say, red flags were flying!

God and all His glory had a divine appointment for our family.  A neighbor, who later became a good friend, had recently rescued an adult dog and asked if she could see how he did with other dogs and wanted to know if she could bring Chief down to play with Popeye.  (On a side note you should know that Popeye is a pit bull, not the breed of dog others typically embrace.)  She shared her love of homeschooling with me and that was all she wrote.

I spent the next two weeks finding out all I needed to do to pull Commander Cody out of public school.  At the end of the Christmas break I broke the news to his father that I wanted to homeschool our little boy.  (Another side note, we have a blended family: his, hers, and ours).  Commander Cody's father shared his concerns but didn't put up much of an argument and so began our odyssey.  We received our go ahead from the county and the next thing I know I have jumped in feet first into educating my son.

My neighbor/friend took us under her wing and included us in a co-op she was having at her house.

I pray that through sharing my journey the lives of other families will be touched. Perhaps you are already on the road of homeschooling and need encouragement or you are considering home education and need to know you can do this.  You don't have to be the perfect family, living behind the white picket fence, or a certifide teacher or for that fact, a college graduate to teach the child or children God has given you.  You just have to love your baby/babies!
